For a lot of people the word detox is enough to bring them out in a cold sweat. You just have to utter the words detox or cleanse and they conjure up images of people fainting, disgusting grass flavoured drinks and self starvation, which couldn't be further from the truth!
First of all lets understand why we should detox. Everyday we absorb millions of toxins into our bodies, through our skin, from the liquids and foods we eat, even from the air we breath. These toxins get stuck within our body systems if we don't work to get them out. A food detox targets mainly the digestive system but in turn it will help your other body systems to function better. Your internal organs will all benefit, as will your skin, your muscles and your immune system.
We regularly wash our hands throughout the day to remove dirt and bacteria We cleanse our skin everyday by showering to remove, sweat, bacteria, dead skin cells and other toxins. We do this because we know (and can see!) it needs to be done. What if we told you that your body needs to be cleansed internally just as much as it does externally, would you try? It seems pointless to keep cleaning the surface of our bodies while we leave the most important parts uncared for right? Almost like washing your hands before shovelling a McDonald's into your mouth ;) What is really worse for you, eating that food with dirty hands or the actual toxins in the greasy food it's self... have a think?!
It seems that most of us live in a 'Too fast to live, too young to die' frame of mind these days. We've all been there, us included "I'm going to eat that brownie, I mean I could be dead tomorrow so why not?" The likelihood is that you won't drop dead and it's really just an excuse to eat badly or not exercise. Imagine if things were different and you could see the effects of what you did or ate on your body the next day. Would you still eat that brownie, skip doing exercise or smoke that cigarette? Most of us defiantly wouldn't! It takes time for the effects of what we eat and do to reach the surface of our bodies but internally it is HAPPENING. What you eat and do today will effect how you look and feel tomorrow, next week and even next year!
Our detox is set into 7 steps, with each step lasting a day giving a total of a week long detox. Here is a quick break down of the stages to get you prepared.
Stage 1 Liquids only
Stage 2 Liquid and fruit only
Stage 3 Add raw vegitables
Stage 4 Add cooked vegetables and brown rice
Stage 5 Add beans, lentils, nuts and seeds
Stage 6 Add grains and live yogurt
Stage 7 Add fish
That should get you thinking about what you're going to have to change in your diet and start getting prepared mentally. We hope you're managing to cut down on the things you need to in order to start the detox next week. We'll bring you full details on each stage soon :)
